What differentiate the class of 150, 300 and 600 Flanges?
It is classified according to ASME B16.5. The pressure range of the flange is 150 #, 300, 600 to 2500 #. The terms “#”, “classes” and “Ib”, may be used interchangeably to designate a pressure classified flange. Since 150 Ib are not related to 150 psi, 300 Ib or 600 Ib are not tied to 300 or 600 psi pressure rating. The pressure level of the flange depends on the material (A 105, stainless steel, nickel alloy, etc.), the state and of the compressive force. Here we use the term “class”, which is not confused with the term “rating”. So, when asked to get a question from many customers, this is a class of 150 Flange or the ASME B16.5 class 150 Flange
The pressure class used for flanges definition can be a bit confusing at first, but it’s actually quite simple. In this confusion part is the reason why the notation system, the pound sign, abbreviated as Ib, # all these shows the pressure rating of the flange, but the cannot really show the amount of pressure handle by the flange directly. Example 150psi does not correlate with the flange rating 150#, a lot of people think wrongly. Fittings and Flanged valves falls into rating/class categories are classified by the B16 committees of ASME (Association of Mechanical Engineers), and accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This flange isforging, and is linked to the nominal Pipe size (NPS). This flange has pressure rating of #150, #300, #600 and # 2500 and is based on two main factors.
- Material the flange is made from
- The temperature at which Flange works safely
For example, a 150-pound flange made of carbon steel, ductile iron, or stainless steel may have a maximum pressure rating of about 270psi at room temperature. However, this value may likely change with changes in temperature. At 400 ° F, the same #150 flange does not seem able to www.kp-lok.com withstand 180psi pressure. As the temperature increases, the pressure level decreases. This is applicable to all flanges.
The best way to differentiate between flanges classes is to leave the side of its object stamp or logo, and/ or an industrial valve specialist. However, if you are conversant with flange classes you will know the difference between the #150, #300 and the #600 pound flanges for 2 pipes spotted right away and the possibly outer diameter of the ball, number of bolt holes and the flange thickness. For example, #600Ib flange for a 2 pipe will be twice thicker than #150Ib flange of similar sizes.
